Hanging Light

Playing with Surface

Objective: To explore surface to discover a form that is truly compelling and translate those experiments into a functional lighting design.

Deliverables:

  • Must be experimental and interesting

  • Has to highlight interesting form when turned on and off

Compelling Surface’s

Investigating the organic movement of materials in nature, focusing on surfaces that captivate the eye and invite continued exploration. This insight will be the foundation which guides the lamps design direction.

Physical Study Models

Relevance - These models will help guide the final form. specifically, the concrete rock and the twisting of the towel

Surface Exploration

Exploring surface form through 3D experimentation using Rhino 8 as a primary modeling tool.

Final Form Direction

Digitally modeled in Rhino 8 and fabricated through 3D printing with PLA basic filament.

About the design - Rooted in the flow of lava from a central magma chamber, the form radiates outward, its twisting surfaces capturing the layered solidification of volcanic rock.

Material Exploration

Experimenting with Quikrete sand/topping mix and acrylic fortifier to conceal print lines while developing a controlled, rough surface texture.
